The key to Tombs is pass down Royal lineage, but as there had been 113 kings before Noctis, many of Tombs and the Royal arms they house have been lost to time. Weapons they house have special abilities, and Tombs also once had the function of sealing out daemons in their vicinity, but spells have begun to wear off. When rulers of yore die, they leave their powers behind seal inside their respective Tombs. As statues at Insomnia are said to hold souls of past kings, waiting for the call of the current monarch, Royal Tombs seem to also hold souls of Royal arms, as they glow when grasped by their rightful owner and soul crystals emanate from them. They have been erected as a memorial to the King or queen who claimed that piece of land in the name of Lucis. Royal Tombs are ancient coffins for Lucian kings, somewhat akin to the statues of the Old Wall in Insomnia. Prince Noctis set out on a quest to locate Royal Tombs to collect Royal arms from their depths, phantom weapons only the bloodline of Lucian kings can wield. They hide around Eos in hard-to-reach areas and many legends surround their locations. Royal Tombs are where remains of past kings of Lucis lie in Final Fantasy XV.
